COIL - Computational Intelligence and Learning

A new exiting event of ERUDIT is approaching: ESIT '99, the European Symposium on Intelligent Techniques. It will - as has already been announced - take place in the Orthodox Academy of Crete, near Chania on Crete (Greece). Preparations are practically complete and we are sure that the program offers more attractions than ever: in addition to the plenary, semi-plenary and parallel sessions all Technical Committees will organize workshops during this event. The participants, and in due course all the nodes of the Network, will receive a CD ROM containing descriptions of the nodes of ERUDIT based on the up-dated ECUME Database and including the proceedings of ESIT'99. For TC A (Primary and Process Industry) and TC F (Finance, Trade, and Services) we have started a comprehensive questionnaire survey. Many answers have already arrived and we will report on the results in Crete.
We will also be able to report about new developments of the cooperation of the European Networks of Excellence (NoE) ERUDIT (Fuzzy Sets), EvoNet (Evolutionary Computing), NeuroNet (Neural Nets) and MLNet (Machine Learning). Those networks have formed a cluster "COIL" (Computational Intelligence and Learning), the aim of which is to identify and exploit synergies of the four approaches represented by the respective NoEs. There have already been a number of meetings of the coordinating committee. The European Commission supports this activity financially and we hope very soon to be able to offer new perspectives and opportunities to all the nodes of the participating Networks of Excellence. Furthermore, an enlarged Technological Roadmap will soon be available and we count on your help to make it as attractive as possible. The 3rd international competition is also organised by ERUDIT as an activity of COIL.
Following the launch of the 5th framework program three information days took place in Europe to explain aspects of Future and Emerging Technologies part of of the framework of IST (Information Society Technologies) programme. IST combines the former ESPRIT, ACTS and Telematics programs and also includes basic research work under the heading Future and Emerging Technologies. The information days focussed on three "proactive" initiatives: "Quantum Information Processing and Communication", "Universal Information Ecosystems (UIE)" and "Nanotechnology Information Devices".
For ERUDIT and the other NoEs in COIL (see above), UIE is presumably of highest interest, particularly since new types of projects and applications are envisioned. To discuss those in detail is certainly beyond the scope of this Newsletter. We hope, however, to discuss this with you in Crete. For those who will not be at Crete and who have an interest in bidding for research projects, a guide can be found on the web site: http://www.cordis.lu/ist/fetuie.htm
Note that there is only a limited time left to prepare the proposals which are due in the middle of June.
